Ah, those childhood memories of visiting the grandparents and the warm comforting feeling of being tucked into an old metal bed. The touch of materials like chenille and terry cloth bring back these fond feelings. Why not bring this comfort to your own family by creating a retro shower curtain out of these old school fabrics?

There is nothing better than stepping out of the bath or shower into the warm embrace of a fluffy terry cloth towel or robe. Nothing says home and safety more than comfy robes and fuzzy slippers, especially on a cold winter night. It is simple to create this look but with a more modern sensibility.

For a shower curtain that has a country or cottage flair, why not consider making a curtain that looks like a patchwork quilt.  Gather up your selection of smaller towels, like hand towels and face clothes and see what might work together. Better yet, peruse the bathroom linen offerings online and buy some new inexpensive pieces. Simply stitch together various sizes and shapes just as is done to create a quilt.

Chenille bedspreads were a staple in nearly every home in the period between the 1940’s and the 1960’s. They were inexpensive, washed well, and dried quickly on the line. They were virtually indestructible and came in all colors of the rainbow. While it may take a bit of searching to find the popcorn type spread, it is easy to turn a bedspread into a curtain.

Measure both the existing shower curtain length and the width of the curtain rod. Use these to determine the size of bedspread needed or if lucky enough to have inherited an old one, see if it can be tailored to fit the shower area. Grommet kits are available from craft and bath retailers or a valance type topping can be sewn to use more traditional hook type hangers. In a matter of a couple of hours, that safe and comfortable feeling can be relived via a new retro shower curtain.
