Hair replacement prices include costs that many may not consider without researching the topic. When purchasing a hairpiece, the costs to care for, repair, and eventually replace the piece can be found on the Internet and should be factored into the wearer’s budget. Though maintenance does not involve a large outlay of cash, it can add up over time.

Some hairpieces can withstand washing and styling at home, using shampoo, conditioner, and a blow dryer on warm setting. Other manufacturers recommend that the hairpiece be serviced only by a professional stylist. Servicing the hairpiece includes removing tape and hair spray residue as well as any scalp oils or perspiration.  A stylist will charge approximately $60 to service a hairpiece.

Hairpieces eventually need to be repaired or replaced. A custom-made hairpiece will last about one year. It may then require some repairs and adjustment to the color. After this repair, the piece should last a few more years. A synthetic hairpiece will generally last six months before needing repairs. Major repairs are not recommended for a synthetic piece. It is more cost-effective to simply replace the piece.

The hairpiece repair process includes re-coloring the piece, adding more hair, and replacing a worn-out base. It is much easier to add more hair to a custom piece because the hair is sewn in by hand rather than by a machine. It is also easier to replace the base of a custom piece because the base is less rigid than that of a synthetic piece. A custom piece has a lace or gauze base that can be easily repaired or re-woven.  Repairing a custom piece usually costs about $50 per hour of work involved.

Though a custom hairpiece may cost more to purchase, it may end up costing less to maintain and repair that would a synthetic piece.  The synthetic piece may cost the same amount to repair as it did to initially purchase. Buying a quality hairpiece in the beginning will allow the wearer to save money on maintenance and repair.
