How To Install A Truck Topper Yourself

Consumers who have purchased a truck topper for the flat bed may want to install the item themselves. This will save them some money versus having the product professionally installed. Installing a truck cap will take the automobile to a new level in terms of functionality.

The cap provides the storage capacity of the flat bed, and then some. It can be ordered with shelves, rods, compartments, side doors, and can even be designed with a walk-in back door. This makes it the perfect product for families that regularly go camping, skiing, or fishing. The gear can be safely stashed in the flat bed, away from harmful weather and under lock and key.

Installing a truck topper is easy and does not take much time for anyone with even the most basic handyperson skills. The equipment needed is the cap, J-hook mounts, a 3/8 inch ratchet and sockets, and one or two people to provide assistance. The flat bed should be cleared and cleaned prior to starting the project.

Have the assistants lift the cap onto the bed, placing it evenly on the bed rails. Push it toward the front of the bed, then crawl inside and put the mounting bolts over the inside lip of the cap. The J-hook should securely clamp the lip of the bed to the lip of the bed rail. Hand tighten the hooks, then crawl out to make sure the truck topper is aligned with the vehicle and does not hang off on any sides. Crawl back inside the bed and tighten the J-hooks using the ratchet and sockets.

Installing a truck topper requires only J-hook mounts, a ratchet with sockets, and some friends. The project can be completed in less than 20 minutes and will look like it was done professionally. The group can then load up the gear and embark on the camping or sporting adventure.
